Title: Smart Antenna Techniques and Their Application to Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract: In this talk we will discuss the use of smart antennas in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). We consider MANETs with directional antennas, beamforming/adaptive antennas, and/or multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. We describe the improved performance that these antennas can provide,including collision avoidance, lower latency, higher capacity, and longer battery life. The issues faced when using smart antennas in MANETs will also be addressed, including neighbor discovery, as well as how the MAC can be modified to get the maximum benefit with smart antennas.
