Pre-Conference Trip

Sunday 30 May 2004

Ostrobothnian Mire Experience

A Pre-Conference Trip to the 7-kilometre long nature trail of the protected Pilpasuo mire in Oulu will be organised on Sunday 30 May at 13.00-17.00.

Visit to the vast protected mire area of Pilpasuo provides a memorable experience of true Finnish wilderness. Mires are very typical to the Ostrobothnian landscape as they cover 60 % of the land area in parts of the region. Walking along an elevated wooden path and small trails around Pilpasuo mire, one can see the nature starting to bloom. Finnish spring is just turning into summer and leaves in the trees are opening. A plough stilt (Grus grus) and birds of prey may circle on the mire. One can relax and enjoy the silence of the wilderness around a fireplace where coffee and pancakes are prepared.

The participation fee for the Pre-Conference Trip 30EUR includes transportation; guides (from biology department of the University of Oulu); coffee and pancakes; and VAT. Guides in other languages besides English may be available on request.

Please note that the ground in the mire area is wet (especially due to recently melted snow) and therefore you will need appropriate shoes. More information on Finnish mires
