Prof. Behnaam Aazhang

Behnaam Aazhang received his B.S. (with highest honors), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering
from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1981, 1983, and 1986, respectively.
From 1981 to 1985, he was a Research Assistant in the Coordinated Science Laboratory, University of Illinois. In August
1985, he joined the faculty of Rice University, Houston, Texas, where he is now the J.S. Abercrombie Professor and Chair
of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and also the Director of Center for Multimedia Communications.
He has been a Visiting Professor at IBM Federal Systems Company, Houston, Texas, the Laboratory for Communication Technology
at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, the Telecommunications Laboratory at University of Oulu,
Oulu, Finland, the U.S. Air Force Phillips Laboratory, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and at Nokia Mobile Phones in Irving, Texas.
His research interests are in the areas of communication theory, information theory, and their applications with emphasis
on multiple access communications, cellular mobile radio communications, and wireless communication networks.
Dr. Aazhang is a Fellow of IEEE, a recipient of the Alcoa Foundation Award 1993, the NSF Engineering Initiation Award
1987-1989, and the IBM Graduate Fellowship 1984-1985, and is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. He is a distinguished
lecturer of IEEE Communication Society and also a recipient of 2004 IEEE Communication Society’s Stephen O. Rice best paper
award for a paper with A. Sendonaris and E. Erkip. Dr. Aazhang has been listed in the Thomson-ISI Highly Cited Researchers
and has been keynote and plenary speaker of several conferences. He is serving as the general chair of the 2006 Communication
Theory Workshop, San Juan, Puerto Rico, chair of the Technical Program Committee for 2005 Asilomar Conference, Monterey, CA,
and the co-chair of the Technical Program Committee of International Workshop on Convergent Technologies (IWCT), Oulu, Finland,
June 6-10, 2005. He has served on Houston Mayor’s Commission on Cellular Towers 1998-2004, as the Editor for Spread Spectrum
Networks of IEEE Transactions on Communications 1993-1998, the Treasurer of IEEE Information Theory Society 1995-1998, the
Secretary of the Information Theory Society 1990-1993, the Publications Chairman of the 1993 IEEE International Symposium on
Information Theory, San Antonio, Texas, and as the co-chair of the Technical Program Committee of 2001 Multi-Dimensional and
Mobile Communication (MDMC) Conference in Pori, Finland.

Ezio Biglieri is presently a professor with Politecnico di Torino. His previous positions include professorships
with Universià di Napoli (1975–1977) and with UCLA (1987–1989).
He has held visiting positions with the Department of System Science, UCLA, the Mathematical Research
Center, Bell Laboratories,Murray Hill, NJ, the Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, NJ, the Department of
Electrical Engineering, UCLA, the Telecommunication Department of The Ecole Nationale Sup´erieure
des Télécommunications, Paris, France, the University of Sydney, Australia, the Yokohama National
University, Japan, the Electrical Engineering Department of Princeton University, the University of
South Australia, Adelaide, the University of Melbourne, and the Institute for Communications Engineering,
Munich Institute of Technology, Germany.
He was elected three times to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society, and
he served as its President in 1999. He was the general co-chairman of the “IEEE 2000 International
Symposium on Information Theory,” Sorrento, Italy, June 2000, and the general co-chairman of ISITA
2004, Parma, Italy. He is a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Information Theory Society and the IEEE
Communications Society.
He was an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Communications, the IEEE Transactions on Information
Theory, the IEEE Communications Letters, the Journal on Communications and Networks, and the Editor in
Chief of the European Transactions on Telecommunications. Since 2004 he has been the Editor-in-Chief of
the IEEE Communications Letters.
Among other honors, he received the IEEE Third-Millennium Medal, the IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize
Paper Award, and the IEEE Communications Society Edwin Howard Armstrong Achievement Award.
Ezio Biglieri is a Fellow of the IEEE.

João Schwarz da Silva joined the European Commission in 1991 where he has been Head of Unit for Mobile and Satellite Communications for many years as well as Head of Unit for Networked Audio-Visual Systems, Home Platforms. Currently he is the Director for Network and Communication Technologies in the Directorate General “Information Society and Media”.
He was instrumental in the development of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems, UMTS, is a recipient of the UMTS Forum Chairman's award, granted for the best individual contribution towards UMTS and was involved in the development of reconfigurable radio and 4th Generation system concepts. At the ITU, which he joined in 1982, he served as Head of division responsible for the development of the HF Broadcasting Planning System. Between 1971 and 1982 he worked for the Ministry of Communications, Canada. Joao Schwarz da Silva received a PhD on the Performance Analysis of Mobile Packet Radio Systems from Carleton University, Ottawa.

Prof. Anthony Ephremides

Anthony Ephremides received his B.S. degree from the National Technical University of Athens (1967), and M.S. (1969) and Ph.D. (1971) degrees from Princeton University, all in Electrical Engineering. He has been at the University of Maryland since 1971, and currently holds a joint appointment as Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department and the Institute of Systems Research (ISR). He is co-founder of the NASA Center for Commercial Development of Space on Hybrid and Satellite Communications Networks established in 1991 at Maryland as an off-shoot of the ISR.
He was a Visiting Professor in 1978 at the National Technical University in Athens, Greece, and in 1979 at the EECS Department of the University of California, Berkeley, and at INRIA, France. During 1985-1986 he was on leave at MIT and ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. He was the General Chairman of the 1986 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control in Athens, Greece. He has also been the Director of the Fairchild Scholars and Doctoral Fellows Program, an academic and research partnership program in Satellite Communications between Fairchild Industries and the University of Maryland. He won the IEEE Donald E. Fink Prize Paper Award (1992). He has been the President of the Information Theory Society of the IEEE (1987), and served on the Board of the IEEE (1989 and 1990).

Matti Latva-aho was born in Kuivaniemi, Finland in 1968. He received the M.Sc. (E.E.), Lic.Tech. and Dr. Tech degrees from the University of Oulu, Finland in 1992, 1996 and 1998, respectively. From 1992 to 1993, he was a Research Engineer at Nokia Mobile Phones, Oulu, Finland. During the years 1994 - 1998 he was a Research Scientist at Telecommunication Laboratory and Centre for Wireless Communications at the University of Oulu. Matti has been Director of Centre for Wireless Communications at the University of Oulu during 1998-2003. Since 2000 he has been Professor of Digital Transmission Techniques at Telecommunication Laboratory. His research interests include future broadband wireless communication systems and related transceiver algorithms. Matti has published more than 100 conference or journal papers in the field of wireless communications. In 2005, Matti will be the Director for Broadband Wireless Access Research at CWC.

Presently Prof. Ramjee Prasad is Director of the “Center for Teleinfrastruktur (CTIF)”. He has published over 500 technical papers,
and authored and co-edited 15 books about Wireless Multimedia Communications (Artech House). His research interest lies in wireless
networks, packet communications, multiple access protocols, access techniques and multimedia communications. He is a fellow of the IEE,
a fellow of IETE, a senior member of IEEE, a member of NERG, and a member of the Danish Engineering Society (IDA).

Prof. Theodore S. Rappaport

Theodore S. Rappaport is an active teacher, researcher, and entrepreneur. He received BSEE, MSEE, and Ph.D.
degrees from Purdue University in 1982, 1984, and 1987, respectively. From 1988 to 2002, he was on the faculty
of Virginia Tech. He joined the University of Texas in 2002 as the William and Bettye Nowlin Chair in Engineering,
and is the founding director of the Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG) at UT’s Austin campus.
He has over 100 US or international patents issued or pending and has authored, co-authored, and co-edited numerous
books in the wireless field, including the popular textbooks Wireless Communications: Principles & Practice (Prentice-Hall,
1996, 2002), Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications: IS-95 and Third Generation CDMA Applications (Prentice Hall, 1999),
and Principles of Communication Systems Simulation (Prentice Hall, 2004). He was recipient of the 1999 Stephen O. Rice
Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Communications Society.
Dr. Rappaport currently serves on the Technological Advisory Council for the Federal Communications Commission, and has
been appointed to a National Academy of Science panel to study the future of telecommunications research in the US.
He is also serving as Technical Program Chairman for the IEEE Global Communications Conference, to be held in Dallas,
TX in Nov/Dec 2004. He is series editor for the Prentice Hall Communications Engineering and Emerging Technologies book
series, and serves on the editorial board of International Journal of Wireless Information Networks (Plenum Press, NY)
and the advisory board of Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing for Wiley InterScience. He is a Fellow of the IEEE,
and is active in the IEEE Communications and Vehicular Technology societies.
In 1989, Rappaport founded TSR Technologies, Inc., a cellular radio/PCS software radio equipment firm that he sold in 1993,
and in 1995, he founded Wireless Valley Communications, Inc., a pioneering creator of software products for the design,
measurement, and management of wireless networks. He is a registered professional engineer in the states of Virginia and
Texas, and is a Fellow and past member of the board of directors of the Radio Club of America. He has consulted for over
25 multinational corporations and has served the International Telecommunications Union as a consultant for emerging nations.
Rappaport received the Marconi Young Scientist Award in 1990, an NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowship in 1992, the Sarnoff
Citation from the Radio Club of America in 2000. He received the James R. Evans Avant Garde award from the IEEE Vehicular
Technology Society in 2002, the Frederick Emmons Terman Outstanding Electrical Engineering Educator Award from the ASEE in
2002, and the Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineering Alumni Award from Purdue University in October 2004. Ted is
married and has three children.

Mikko A. Uusitalo is head of international cooperation at the
Nokia Research Center. He obtained a M.Sc. (Eng) and Dr.Tech. from
Helsinki University of Technology in 1993 and 1997, and a B.Sc.
(Economics) from Helsinki School of Economics in 2003. Mikko has
several leading or participating roles in international and Nokia
internal communities, strategically guiding research cooperation. One
of these roles is chairmanship of the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF).
