Major Achievements

Core competence of CWC is in the overall wireless systems design for commercially important applications. CWC’s track record in designing both commercial and military communication systems that are operational today is unique and exceptional at both national and global level. Some of the main achievements are listed below:

  • CWC is one of the few academic partners from Europe to participate in development process of 3G and IMT-A (4G) cellular standards

  • World’s first cognitive network phone call was made in January 2010 using CWC’s cognitive radio network CRAMNET (Cognitive Radio Assisted Mobile Ad Hoc Network)

  • CWC and Elektrobit developed jointly radio channel model used for IMT-A standardization

  • CWC was one of the key academic players with Nokia in generating solutions for 3G mobile telephony systems in the 1990’s

  • CWC has developed a wireless sensor networking tool in its Embedded Networking Laboratory (2004)

  • -> This work lead to CWC’s first spin-off company Sensinode Ltd. 2006

  • CWC and Nokia developed jointly very early version of Wibree (ultra low power Bluetooth)

  • Tactical radio communications and positioning system for Finnish Navy were designed at CWC

  • Current data link system in Finnish Air Force Hornet F-18 aircraft was designed at CWC

  • CWC has been granted two times the best PhD thesis prize in all technical sciences in Finland; these have been the only occasion when the prize was granted to electrical engineering or computer science
