CWC Kainuu

Centre for Wireless Communications opened an office in Snowpolis, Vuokatti at the beginning of 2007. By strengthening its local research activities in Kainuu, CWC increased the level of knowledge on wireless communications in the area.

Previously, the academic research activities in Kainuu were carried out by partners belonging to the Kajaani University Consortium where research is related, for example, to applying measurement technology to different kind of applications. Yet, the wireless data transmission part was missing.

With CWC Kainuu, the Centre for Wireless Communications brings its globally acknowledged know-how in wireless communications to the Kainuu region. CWC's goal is to focus on research and development of wireless wideband transmission technologies, as well as safety, authority and in-vehicle communications for challenging environments. Healthcare and welfare related applications are also among the focal activities of CWC Kainuu as is the automation industry. All these application areas are covered widely by the local industry which makes the cooperation highly fruitful. In many cases, embedded wireless sensor networks can be the solution to fulfill data communication needs.

Especially, the infrastructure and sports research facilities in Vuokatti, such as the ski tunnel, enable the experimental work and make it possible to complete the piloting for research projects. The Vehicle Information Systems programme ongoing in Kajaani has allowed CWC Kainuu to complete a couple research projects for vehicle data transfer.

Many of CWC Kainuu's current research partners are from the local industry and research institutions in Kainuu, but some key partners operation from outside the region.

CWC Kainuu is actively looking for international partners with the same research interest areas.
